SFO publishes Long-term Insights Briefing exploring emerging trends in fraud and corruption detection

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has published its Long-term Insights Briefing (LTIB): Staying ahead of the curve: Responding to emerging trends in detecting fraud and corruption in New Zealand.

The SFO’s LTIB explores the evolving landscape of fraud and corruption detection, with key insights and best practices from international jurisdictions as well as the SFO’s own experience.

It examines trends impacting fraud detection, three possible futures faced by New Zealand, and the strategic opportunities being explored by international jurisdictions which can enhance detection capabilities.

Detection was chosen as the briefing focus because fraud and corruption are hidden, insidious offences where wrongdoing often occurs over long periods of time without identification. Detection in this context is both particularly challenging and important.

Following consultation with agencies, the public and other key stakeholders, the LTIB has been finalised and has now been presented in the House of Representatives.

During the consultation period, feedback was received from government agencies and several key stakeholders including the New Zealand Institute of Directors and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, alongside academics. The SFO is grateful to everyone who participated in the feedback process.

What is a Long-Term Insights Briefing?

The Public Service Act 2020 requires the Serious Fraud Office to produce a Long-Term Insights Briefing(external link) at least once every three years. These briefings are a way for government agencies, acting independently of their Ministers, to explore and report back on issues that matter for the future wellbeing of New Zealanders.
